Competition Rate of Early Decision Admission for 2021 Academic Year Marks 6.55:1

The 2021 CNU Early Decision Admission recorded a high competition rate of 6.55:1.

According to CNU, it accepted early decision applications until September 28 for the upcoming academic year, which has recorded a competitive rate of 6.55:1. The university received 21,285 applications while admitting 3,251 applicants (including 27 for the combined curriculum of undergraduate-MA integrated programs in the School of Dentistry and excluding 84 for majors designed for the special contract with local corporations for employment).

The CNU Gwangju campus recorded a rate of 7.27:1 (7.65:1 last year) and the Yeosu campus 3.87:1 (5.8:1 last year), respectively.

The decreased competition rates of CNU are attributed to the decrease in the school age population and the increased number of openings the university offers, as it established new programs in cutting-edge technology fields.

As for the Subject-Oriented Admissions (general type), the combined curriculum of undergraduate-MA integrated programs in the School of Dentistry recorded the highest competition rate among departments with 25.87:1, where 388 applied for 15 openings. 

In addition, the Subject-Oriented Admissions (general type), which admits the largest number of students, recorded a high competition rate of 6.9:1 as it received 10,226 applications but accepted 1,483. By field of study, the Department of Anthropology of the College of Social Sciences recorded the highest rate among humanities studies (a competition rate of 20.43:1 as it received 143 applications for 7 openings), while the Department of Horticulture and Science of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences recorded the second highest (a competition rate of 15.83:1, as it received 95 applications for 6 openings) in the field of natural sciences.

As for the General Student’s Record Admissions (regional talent type), which is only for students who have completed a high school curriculum in the Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk regions, it recorded an admission rate of 7.32:1, as it received 4,778 application for 653 openings. The Department of History Education of the College of Education recorded the highest competition rate of 12.67:1 (38 applications for 3 openings) in the field of humanities, and the Department of Physics of the College of Natural Sciences recorded a rate of 15.83:1 (95 applications for 6 openings), the highest in the field of sciences.

The Student’s Record-Based Admissions (excellent students in high school curriculum type) marked a competition rate of 7.19:1 as it recruited 476 out of 3,421 who applied.

The competition rate of medical science, which has recorded highly competitive rates, enjoyed the same popularity this year as the Pre-Medical Department, recording a rate of 14.16:1 (as it received 524 applications for 37 openings) in the Student’s Record-Based Admissions (general type) and a rate of 9.26:1in the Student’s Record-Based Admissions (local talents type), as it received 352 applications for 38 openings. The Department of Pre-Veterinary Medicine recorded a rate of 13.71:1, receiving 192 applications for 14 openings) in the Student’s Record-Based Admissions (general type), and a rate of 9.7:1 after it received 97 applications for 10 openings in the Student’s Record-Based Admissions (local talents type).

The six high-tech departments that will start their full-fledged operation from 2021 also received applications: the School of AI Convergence of the AI Convergence College recorded a rate of 6.03:1 after receiving 458 applications for 76 openings, the Department of Intelligent Mobility Convergence of the AI Convergence College earned a rate of 6.21:1 for the 174 applications it received for 28 openings, and the Department of Big Data Convergence of the AI Convergence College garnered a rate of 6.18:1 for the 173 applications it received for 28 openings. The Department of Health Care Medical Engineering of the College of Engineering Sciences recorded a rate of 2.47:1 after receiving 89 applications for 36 openings and the Department of Petrochemical Materials Engineering had a rate of 2.9:1, as it received 87 applications for 30 openings. In the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, the Department of Smart Fisheries Resource Management recorded a rate of 1.8:1, receiving 54 applications for 30 openings.

The Subject-Oriented Admissions (talented students in arts) of the Department of Music Education, which selects students through performance oriented screening, recorded a high competition rate of 21.6:1, as it received 108 applications for 5 openings, and the Department of Korean Traditional Music and the Department of Fine Arts, which employed performance-oriented selection (talented students in arts) for the first time this year, recorded a rate of 3.76:1 (94 applications for 25 openings) and 5.75:1 (253 applications for 44 openings), respectively.

CNU also received extra quota application for majors with early employment contracts where 201 applications were received for 84 openings in the available three programs, in which 48 enterprises participate for early employment contracts.

CNU will conduct an interview with the applicants for the Student’s Record-Based Admissions for two days from December 9 - 10 and for the Subject-Oriented Admissions on December 11. The performance test will take place on December 15. Since it is a blind interview, applicants are prohibited from wearing school uniforms or name tags, which may expose their personal information. It also prohibits any sort of indication of the name of the applicant, parents, relatives, information on their occupation or what company they work for, and information that can infer any of these points.

The first-round successful applicants will be announced on the CNU website on December 27th.
