A dinosaur excavated by CNU has been reborn as a three-dimensional commemorative medal by cutting-edge coin manufacturing technology.

CNU’s Korea Dinosaur Research Center (Director: Professor Huh Min of the Faculty of Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences) and KOMSCO, the Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation, introduced a commemorative medal of Koreanosaurus Boseong Nsis, which was officially named after Korea and started sales at home and abroad on September 21.

This commemorative medal is the first work of the 'Korean Peninsula Dinosaur Series' with the theme of the Cretaceous dinosaur first discovered on the Korean Peninsula, and was created through collaboration between CNU's Korean Dinosaur Research Center and KOMSCO to promote new awareness of dinosaurs on the Korean Peninsula.

This medal is the first product of new technology that makes a golden dinosaur egg into a three-dimensional shape using advanced coining technique and combines it with the conventional shape of medals. It is possible to take the fossils out of the shells, which intends to imitate the act of excavating dinosaur eggs and bone fossils. In addition, the dinosaur bone fossils inside the dinosaur eggs were designed highly realistically.

On the front side of the medal, the restored appearance of the Koreanosaurus Boseong Nsis is carved in a delicate manner, and the silhouette image of the dinosaur and its name are engraved on the back.

There are 999 of these items for this commemorative medals, which are made of silver and priced at 1,188,000 KRW per item. The external shell’s weight is 370g with a diameter of 70mm and the egg potion is 38g and 30×40mm in size).

2,000 of the white copper commemorative medals will be released in the first round. The price for these is 49,500 KRW per piece, which weigh 26g with a diameter of 40 mm).

The packaging is designed with the motif of dinosaur footprints and dinosaur eggs found on the Korean Peninsula. The package for the white copper medal is made in the form of an educational booklet that provides various information on dinosaurs. In addition, forgery prevention technology was applied to the card-type warranty in the package.

The dinosaur medal series is attracting attention both at home and abroad, as it was introduced in the September issue of the newsletter published by the World Coin Managers' Conference (MDC), an association of international mints.

The CNU Dinosaur Center and KOMSCO are planning to present a series of medals to commemorate other dinosaurs found in Korea, such as Haenam Ikunus Uhang Liensis in the second series and the Korea Ceratops Hwaseong Nsis in the third series, by carefully selecting native dinosaurs.

CNU’s Korean Dinosaur Research Center is a mecca for the research on dinosaurs of Korean peninsula. Professor Huh, the Director of this center, discovered a perfect dinosaur bone fossil in a dinosaur egg fossil site in Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, and published a research paper in a famous German geology journal in 2011, introducing the Koreanosaurus Boseong Nsis on the international stage
