- 13 members to help the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to ease the burden of its tsunami victims from July 20 to August 10 On July 20, the volunteering group comprised of 13 members left for Sri Lanka in order to render volunteering services. The group, named ‘Human School for Restoring Sri Lankan Disaster,’ will spare no effort to help the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to ease the burden of its tsunami victims, rebuild devastated parts of the country and heal the agony suffered by the bereaved Sri Lankan people who lost their families, relatives and friends. For their commitment, the Faculty of Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences and the Korean Meteorological Administration provided financial supports. The tsunami caused widespread devastation along Sri Lanka’s eastern, southern and western coasts, killing some 30,000 people, damaging over 100,000 houses and affecting about one million people out of a total population of approximately 19 million. The group will be divided into two teams; one with 3 members for professional education and one with 10 members for general education. Prof. Cho Yang-ki in the Faculty of Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences and Mr. Seo Gwang-ho, master-degree holder, and Dr. Byon Do-sung in the Institution of the Oceanography participate in the pro team and will give instructions to the Sri Lankan experts specializing in tsunami disasters. The other team consisting of 10 students will meet the residents and explain how they can cope with the tsunami disaster. They will participate in building houses and giving performances to entertain the children. They will also pay a visit to International non-governmental organizations and the Asian Committee for Human Rights in Hong Kong during the visiting period. CNU expects this program would give its students volunteering spirit and internationalized viewpoints.
