Eight Prominent Professors including Prof. Chung Seok-jong, former President of CNU, Retire on August 31

CNU held a retirement ceremony for eight professors at Yongbong Hall of International Conference Building at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 31. The eight professors were Chung Seok-jong (CNU
s 16th President, Physics), Sung Jin-ki (Philosophy), Chung Seung-joo (Arts), Shim Jeong-wook (Information Statistics), Lee Young-kil (English Education), Lee Young-hee (Physical Education), Chang Kyong (French Education), and Chung Keun-ho (Chemical Education).
The well-respected scholars have dedicated over half a century period of their lives to educating students at CNU. The followings are brief descriptions of their careers.

 



Sung Jin-ki - Dept. of Philosophy, College of Humanities (Ethics)
- Awarded the Order of Service Merit (Green)
He is a scholar who has a ever-last passion for science and makes the foundation for the development of philosophy in Korea. He published lots of books and journals of researches on Niche and ethics. He worked as president of Niche Study in Korea, president of Korean Philosophy Academy, and president of Beomhan Philosophy Academy. He also took the position of the president of Philosophy Association in Korea and he contributed greatly to the development of Korean philosophy. He also had positions such as dean of student affairs of CNU, dean of Humanities College, director of Human Studies Research Center, and chairman of Art and Culture Specialization Project Committee. He has made great contributions to the development of human science and culture & art sectors.



Shim Jeong-wook - Dept. of Info Statistics, College of Natural Sciences (Regression Analysis)
- Awarded the Order of Service Merit (Yellow)
Since the Dept. of Statistics was established, Shim had worked to educate students. He endeavored with all his passion to develop the department. He had positions such as Dean of the College of Natural Sciences, head of the Dept. of Statistics, head of the Dept. of Pre-dentistry, and chief of the academic affairs of the College of Natural Sciences. He presented numerous articles in domestic and foreign journals and he made remarkable achievements in academy and research as well.



Lee Young-kil - Dept. of English Education, College of Education (English Linguistics)
- Awarded the Order of Service Merit (Yellow)
Since joining the Dept. of English Education in 1988, he has contributed to educating students for 17 years. He has also worked actively as a member of English Linguistics and Literature Academy in Korea, English Education Academy in Korea, English Subject Education Academy in Korea, Phonetics Academy, Hangul Academy, Korean Linguistics Association, and international conferences. He made remarkable contributions to the development of English Linguistics and English Education.


Lee Young-hee - Dept. of Physical Education, College of Education (Science of Sports Nutrition)
- Awarded the Order of Service Merit (Yellow)
He joined the faculty of CNU as a full-time lecturer in the Dept. of Physical Education in 1978 and he has been teaching at the department as a professor for 27 years. He endeavored enthusiastically in the research and education of students. He also contributed to the development of tennis as a vice president of Tennis Association of Universities in Korea, and a auditor of Tennis Association in Gwangju, Guide Professor of Tennis Team of CNU.



Chang Kyong - Dept. of French Education, College of Education (French Literature)
- Awarded the Certificate of Contribution by the President of Korea
She joined the CNU faculty as a full-time instructor in the Dept. of French Education in 1978. She has worked and contributed actively to the development of French Education though research and educational activities. She also devoted to raise excellent descendents who would contribute to the development of the nation and the society. She also took the position of Director of Religion and Culture Research Center and devoted to the development of research on religion and CNU researches.


Chung Keun-ho - Dept. of Chemical Education, College of Education (Analytical Chemistry)
- Awarded the Order of Service Merit (Red)
He worked in the College of CNU from 1976. He has committed all his energy for education, research, and guidance of students. He specially strived for making study atmosphere. He published lots of articles in domestic and foreign well-known conferences. He worked as Dean of College of Teaching, Dean of Teachers Graduate School, member of Graduate School, member of personnel committee, and president of National Teachers College and he devoted himself for the development of education.


Chung Seok-jong - Dept. of Physics, College of Natural Sciences (Applied Physics)
- Awarded the Order of Service Merit (Blue)
He joined the CNU faculty as a full-time instructor in 1969. From 2000 to 2004, he served as the 16th President of CNU. He had positions as Vice-President of Korean Physics Association, President of National or Public Universities Association, and Prime Vice-President of Korean University Education Association. He is a board member of KAIST, and a president of Gwangju and Chonnam Branch of Korean Science Nation Association and he has made enormous contribution in the education and development of science technology in Korea. He published more than 80 articles in both domestic and foreign journals including SCI journals. He presented more than 100 research results and he raised the level of research of basic science of CNU to the international level. Especially, he contributed greatly to globalizing the research capacity of this region to achieve the global standard of research. He devoted himself to educating students and fostering qualified physics teachers.

Chung Seung-joo - Dept. of Fine Arts, College of Arts (Western Painting)
- Awarded the Order of Service Merit (Yellow) Since 1976, he has worked as a professor of the Dept. of Fine Art. He established his own painting trend and contributed to the development of local culture and art. In addition, he educated lots of students in the art field of Gwangju and Jeonnam. He had positions such as Dean of Art College, CNU, Head of the Dept. of Fine Art, vice-dean of the academic affairs for the College of Arts, and a member of CNU Personnel Committee. He also contributed to the development of the college through his outstanding research achievements.
