The summer commencement of the 2004 academic year took place at 11 a.m. on Aug.
26. at each college. The bachelor
s degrees were conferred to 894 graduates including
118 students with double majors and the master
s to 357. CNU President Kang Jung
Chae presented doctorates to 76 students with an honorary doctorate. The bachelor
s
degrees were conferred to one graduate, who completed the necessary credit requirements
through the credit bank system. A total of 1,339 graduates received their own
degrees at the ceremony.
On this graduation, the late Park Gi-soon (Dept. of History Education, College
of Education) and other 9 students who should leave the campus because of college
disciplinary punishment were granted honorary graduation certificates. The grantees
were Mr. Ko Dae-ho (42, Dept. of Business Education), Mr. Seong Chan-sung (54,
Dept. of English Language and Literature), Mr. Lee Jae-suk (40, Dept. of Chinese
Language and Literature), Mr. Lee Hyong-gak (40, Dept. of Korean Language and
Literature), Mr. Jung Sam-su (46, Dept. of Korean Language and Literature), Ms.
Hwang Jeong-hee (41, Dept. of English Language and Literature), Mr. Cho Jin-hyong
(40, Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature), Mr. Chung Jung-seop (40, Dept.
of Chinese Language and Literature), and Mr. Choi Bong-hyu (40, Dept. of Physics).
In 1978 the late Park Gi-soon was a 3rd-year student in the Dept. of History Education,
CNU and she strongly provoked the arrest of Prof. Song Gi-suk and colleagues who
announced
Democratic Education Criteria
which criticized the non-democratic
educational reality. She addressed statements on crisis of the nation and criticized
the military government. She was on the list of police search instruction and
she should hide away. Finally, she got college disciplinary punishment and she
died of accidents when she worked as a teacher at Wild-Fire Night Class for the
poor. Her mother, Mrs. Chun Ae-duk (89) and her family stood on the platform of
the hall with big applause of the audience.
Mr. Seong Chan-sung in the Dept. of English Language and Literature was a reporter
of the CNU Press in 1974. He was arrested and accused in the Military Court with
the reasons of criticising President Park Jung-hee
s Government Emergency Action
No. 4. At the 1st judgement, he was sentenced three years of prisonment and he
appealed a court of final and he was sentenced three years and he got a reprieve
of 5 years. However, he had to leave the campus with college disciplinary punishment.
Mr. Lee Jae-seok, Mr. Lee Hyong-gak, Mr. Jung Sam-su, Ms. Hwang Jeong-hee, Mr.
Cho Jin-hyong, Mr. Jung Jung-seop, and Mr. Choi Bong-hyu were sentenced of prisonment
since they entered the American Culture Center to make demonstrations and they
got college disciplinary punishment in the 1980
s.
Dr. Kang Jung-chae, the president of CNU, explained the purposes to grant honorary
graduation certificates to those who suffered for the democratic movements.
“The liberty that we enjoy today was achieved by the fighters who suffered in
the past. It might be late for our students to be aware of the lives of justice
and community, but now we grant the honorary graduation certificates to those
who dedicated themselves in the development of democracy.\"
The graduation ceremony of Medical School and Nursing School, Dental School and
Graduate Schools will be held at 11 on August 30 in the main hall of Myonghak
Center, Hak-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju.
