College of Medicine Marked 3rd Place in Research Grant Amount Competition

Among 41 medical colleges across the nation, CNU’s College of Medicine took the 3rd place in the competition category of research grant amount per professor. In the division of the whole research grant amount, it was ranked 2nd. According to the ‘Current Situation of Medical Education in Korea’, issued by the Korean Medical School Deans’ Council, the research grant amount per individual faculty member at CNU reached 36,623,000 won which was ranked 3rd right after the College of Medicine, Seoul National University (109,142,000 won) and the College of Medicine, Yonsei University (56,461,000 won). It can be said that eight out of ten professors received research grants from other institutions. The figure, 81 percent, stood 2nd place while Chungbuk Medical College took the 1st. Since 2000, the College of Medicine has housed renowned four National Research Center: National Research Laboratory (2000), Genome Research Center for Enteropathogenic Bacteria (2001), Genome Research Center for Hematopoietic Diseases (2001), and Medical Research Center for Gene Regulation (2002). A project proposal, submitted by Prof. Rhee Joon-haeng, was selected as the 2004-2005 government-supported project for regional R&D cluster creation and will be provided 23.4 billion won ($US 20 million) for the next nine years starting 2005. Prof. Rhee
s project aims to develop a new vaccine discovery and production platform. The grant is expected to accelerate the development of a next generation vaccine technology, with a focus on novel and more effective vaccines. This year CNU’s ratio of successful applicants at the 69th National Medicine Examination marked 93.6% and CNU students took the top place in two examination subjects.
