Play “Bride of May” Makes Big Hit

The play “Bride of May,” cosponsored by CNU and Gwangju MBC for the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the May 18 Movement, made a big hit ending in Masan on June 30. The first play was performed at the Main Theater of Gwangju Culture & Art Center at 7:30 p.m. on May 19. About 10,600 enjoyed the performances nationwide. CNU prepared this event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the May 18 movement and to find historical significance of the Movement. A play “Bride of May”, written by Poet Hwang Ji-woo and produced by Director Lee Yoon-taek, has been performed in four major cities; Gwangju, Seoul, Busan, and Masan. A total of 10,600 people enjoyed the performances nationwide. In Gwangju, the performances were on the stage three times at the main theater of Gwangju Culture & Arts Center on May 19-20 (7:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.). On May 26, Pugyong National University in Busan staged the play at the campus theater at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. On May 31 and June 1, the play was presented in Seoul Hanul Theater. Masan had the last one performance on June 3. The play “Bride of May” is produced by Director Lee Yoon-taek, acknowledged as one of the best film directors in contemporary based on Poet Hwang Ji-woo’s original work. The play is a witness of anonymous normal citizens’ individuality who chose death to advocate the minimal dignity as a human being under the struggling situation. It is a short story of young lady and lad’s lamentable love blossomed just in front of death. And it is also a confession rite of the survivors’ sufferings and hope. The play dramatized interestingly the theme of May 18 by telling the love story of youngsters. Around 6,000 audiences enjoyed the performances in Gwangju. The play performances given in Pugyong National University had 1,700 audiences. In Seoul, about 2,100 were present at Hanul Theater to enjoy the play. At the last performance, given in Masan, about 1,000 Masan citizens came to Masan MBC to see the play. Director Lee Yoon-taek said, “The play ‘Bride of May’ was selected as a closing play for the International Milyang Play Festival. It will be performed in Milyang on July 24. It is also scheduled to be on the stage in Namyangju City.” The original story of this play on the May 18 Democracy Movement was written by the poet from Jeolla Province and produced by the director from Busan. In addition, music is played by James, the underground music group from Daegu. It was also performed in major cities in the nation, Gwangju, Seoul, Busan, and Masan. This made the play being in the news. With the request of Kyongpook National University, the play can be on the stage again in Daegu, Los Angeles, and New York as well.
