CNU takes a lead in establishing a new cultural study course titled “The May 18 Movement, Democracy, and Human Rights” for the first time in the nation. Prof. Choi Young-tae in the Department of History, Director of May 18 Research Center, will take charge of the course instructions, which started from the spring semester of 2005. CNU decided to provide this new course in order to educate students in inheriting the spirit of the May 18 Democracy Movement as well as human rights on the occasion of commemorating the 25th anniversary of the May 18 Movement. In November 2004, CNU announced its seven ambitious agendas for the future development of the University. President Kang Jung-chae had pledged to push ahead with a strategy to actively foster studies in some specific sectors such as the study of Honam (southwestern area of Korea) by establishing a tradition of Honam democratic spirit. Prof. Choi said, “These days our students seem to have little knowledge about the May 18 Movement. The newly-established course will focus on getting students to grasp the historic and regional backgrounds of the May 18 Movement. They will learn how the Movement occurred, how it progressed, and who played leading roles for the Movement through the course participation.” Many specialists from various fields of studies including drama, films, literature will be invited as guest speakers for the course instruction.
