Prof. Park Jong-oh, a leading researcher in the robotic studies, has joined the CNU faculty on February 1. He moved his post from Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to the School of Mechanical Systems Engineering, College of Engineering at CNU. Prof. Park has participated in the Intelligent Microsystems Program (IMP) as director. The IMP, the first launched 21C Frontier R & D Program primarily sponsored by Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, completed the first phase and is now undergoing the second phase from July 2003. Microsystem technologies of the past years have been rapidly developed and in consequence the competition in the related worldwide market has risen to extraordinary levels. Under such circumstances many innovative leading technologies and also successful products were achieved during the first phase of IMP through the devotion of all the participating program experts. Prof. Park received the Jang Young-shil Award and the 1st Proud Ilgo(the First High School) Award, the 1st KIST Prize, and the Golden Robot Award in recognition of his dedication to the development of robotics in Korea and research achievements. He graduated from Gwangju First High School and Yonsei University. He received his master’s degree from Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. In 1981, he moved to Germany and started to carry out his studies on robotics. At the KIST, he devoted himself to the development of factory automation and remote-controlled robot systems. Prof. Park said, “I have been entirely devoted to the study on robotics and micro systems for the last twenty years. I found CNU’s strategies and my vision matched up together. That is why I decided to join the CNU faculty. Based on the Robot Technology (RT), Nano Technology (NT), and Bio Technology (BT), emerging as the key study sector in the 21st century, I would like to carry out government-support research projects at CNU.” CNU will contribute to achieve the development of the intelligent robot industry. The newly developed robots that have feelings and emotions like human beings, will help those in need, including the elderly. To meet this plan, CNU plans to concentrate on creating a robotics project center specializing in the filed.
