CNU staff conducted volunteer work in the house of a scholarship donor, who is a street vendor lady.

According to CNU, its staff learned that the house of Mrs. Kim Jong-soon, who donated a scholarship fund and granted it to beneficiary students in a scholarship award ceremony held in March, was so run down and even partially collapsed, which was very dangerous. They went to Kim's house in Haebo-myun in the Hampyeong County to do simple repairs and cleaning.

When they arrived, they found Kim’s house was in a much more dangerous condition. Such old-fashioned fuse box and poor wiring are obsolete and pose the danger of short-circuits and fires. The ceiling of the main bedroom had fallen through, and the slippery muddy house was infested by rats. The old lamps barely lit up the house, and the front yard of the house was left like a pile of agricultural by-products and had been severely neglected.

It was decided to implement a house repair project: 40 staff of the CNU Office of Facilities Management revisited and worked in three shifts. It took more than fifteen days since they should use their spare time to travel to Hampyeong to work on weekdays and had a limited budget to purchase materials to use.

Despite difficulties, the staff modernized the fuse boxes and wiring and fixed the lighting for a well-lit living space. The switch was changed for Kim’s convenience. They also filled holes, repaired the ceiling, and changed the wall paper and flooring. They could not ignore the broken gate and water pump motors for the wells, and installed laundry hangers and a flatbed. Further work to shore up the front side of the house to prevent damage from  winds and maintain the yard drainage were done, too. The office Haebo-myun helped with the disposal of 5 tons or more of garbage.

Choi Chun-ho, the Director of the CNU Office of Facilities Management said, "I admire this elderly lady who has been able to offer the money that she has accumulated while living in such a harsh environment. It was meaningful volunteer work that we can do to make her happy and make ourselves happy, too."

Kim said, "I was so sorry that I could not agree with the repair plan at first. But after your kind endeavors to make my house almost new, I cannot find a proper way to express my gratitude. It even makes me dance in joy.”
