A senior citizen of Seoul who is in his 80s and has worked as a shoe repairer for over 30 years donated 1.2 billion KRW in cash and real estate to CNU.

According to CNU, Kim Byung-yang (84) donated 600 million KRW of cash he had saved for his entire life as a fund to the CNU Digital Library on April 17. In addition, he promised to donate his house in the near future, where he is currently residing, which is worth another 600 million KRW.

Born in Jangseong County, Jeonnnam, Kim graduated elementary school in Jangseong and started working in Gwangju before he moved to Seoul. In the area near Namdaemun, Seoul, he started a delivery service and then a shoe repair shop in Myungdong at the age of 52. The fund he donated was from what he had earned from 30 years of hard work.

Kim stated his intention of donation, saying, “I am grateful to my wife and children who pleasantly agreed to the wish of my life to contribute to the most prestigious university near my hometown. I am also thankful to CNU for appreciating the donation of this modest amount of money.”

President Jeong said, “We will make sure that this donation is spent for meaningful purposes that fulfill the cause of this virtuous deed. We will do our best to teach students sincerely and full-heartedly to foster excellent talents.”

CNU will come up with ways to honor Kim's donation.
