The phoenix on the Yongbong Tower of CNU was replaced with a new one after 40 years since it was installed.

At 2 p.m. on May 16th, CNU placed a replica of the original phoenix on the top of the Yongbong Tower, the symbol of the school as President Jeong, faculty, students and staff attended the ceremony.

The installed male phoenix is made of polished stainless steel and is proportional to the original work, which was 3.1 meters in width, 2.2 meters in length, and 1.7 meters in height, weighing about 100 kilograms. The restoration of the original work has been conducted by Lee Hyung-yong (Art Y), who graduated from the CNU Department of Fine Arts.

The Yongbong Tower was installed in November 1976, when the 2nd Hakdo Guardian Corps (now the General Student Council) went on to conduct surveys and fundraising among students. On June 8th, 1978, it was installed measuring 13.63 meters in height and 4.45 meters in radius. The three lower seats made of granite represent truth, creation, and service while the shape of the three bronze pillars rise just like ascending dragons with a human figure within.

In particular, the shape of the phoenix at the top represented CNU alumni flying out with magnificent meaning. At the time of installation, it was designed to change direction when the wind blew and emit strong reflected light when it received sunlight, a new feature rarely found in other symbolic towers.

On the other hand, the original phoenix that has reached the end of its life was transferred to the CNU Museum and will be permanently preserved.
