CNU’s Language Education Center (LEC, Director: Professor Moon Ki-seok) is providing an online Korean education program commissioned by the U.S. State Department.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, this years CLS (Critical Language Scholarship) will be conducted via real-time online programs with local students in the United States.

Fifteen CLS Korean scholarship recipients selected from all over the United States began their orientation on June 26th, and divided into three classes for eight weeks of training (160 hours total) from June 30th to August 22nd.

In addition, by learning Taekwondo through real-time on-line lectures, students will have a time to get acquainted with Korean culture. In particular, through education on the May 18 Democratization Movement, efforts to internationalize the spirit of May 18 will be facilitated.

Furthermore, by paring up participants with CNU students as language partners, the efficiency of Korean education will be maximized. Korean language partners are expected to contact their partner students via SNSs and help them fulfill their assignments, learn the Korean language, and exchange their culture through video calls and social media for eight weeks, while also improving international perspectives and understanding of multiculturalism.

The CLS Program is a prestigious U.S. governmental program which provides American students from various colleges and majors with language and cultural immersion programs for 14 significant foreign languages.

This year, due to COVID-19, it will only be conducted in five countries, and CNU has been commissioned for six consecutive years since it was selected as a local training institution for Korean language training and for the implementation of the CLS Korean Program in 2015.
