CNU's Diverse Events Commemorating May 18: “May for Everyone, May of Unity”

CNU hosted various events to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising.

On May 16, President Jung, along with faculty, staff, and students, visited the National May 18 Cemetery and the Mangwol-dong Memorial Park to pay respects and offer tributes. They also visited the individual gravesites of former CNU students and faculty who perished during the democratization movement to honor their memory.

The university also held a commemorative ceremony with the CNU Alumni Association, CNU Democratic Association, Faculty Council, staff, and student council to reflect on the significance of that day.

Around the College of Humanities and College of Engineering areas, a blood donation campaign was promoted to encourage a life-sharing culture. 

Especially on May 18 and 19, around 540 members from five nationwide student organizations, including the ▲ May 18 Square University Student Association, ▲ the University Alliance International Political Club PAZ, ▲ the Nationwide Colleges of Education History Camp, ▲ the Gwangju Jeonnam Student Progressive Union, and ▲ the May 18 Student Committee, conducted diverse programs such as lectures, discussions, choir competitions, art exhibitions, visits to historical sites, and survivor meetings at May 18 Square and various lecture halls within the university. A solidarity march from May 18 Square to the main gate of CNU and along Geumnam-ro also took place.

From May 11 to 26 on weekends and holidays, the “CNU Democracy Trail History Exploration” program was offered for Gwangju citizens and visitors. During the Park Seung-hee Memorial Week (April 29 to May 25), joint memorial services were held at May 18 Square and the Park Seung-hee Garden at CNU, and a cosmos flower garden was created and attracted visitors.
