CNU announced that its Future Education Building, previously used as the university's ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) headquarters, has been registered as the Outstanding Architectural Asset No. 2 in Gwangju Metropolitan City.
The Future Education Building is the oldest existing building on the university's Yongbong campus. It was recognized for its historical and cultural value, as well as its unique architectural beauty, which led to its registration as an architectural asset of Gwangju.
Completed in 1955, the building was temporarily used as the main building for the College of Engineering. After the completion of the College of Engineering's first building in 1957, the function of the main building was moved. While the exact date the building became the ROTC headquarters is unclear, it is believed to have been in use since the establishment of the ROTC in 1961.
In 2018, a new building suitable for education and multipurpose use was constructed as part of the university’s Democracy Trail Project, the relocation of ROTC facilities and the repurposing of the existing building. In December 2020, the building’s name was changed from “ROTC Headquarters” to “Future Education Building.” After an internal renovation in 2021, it is currently used as the Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Innovation Platform’s University Education Innovation Center.
As a result of this registration as an outstanding architectural asset, the university will receive partial support for maintenance and repair costs under the “Gwangju Metropolitan City Ordinance on Hanok and Other Architectural Assets.”
