On May 16, Chonnam National University (CNU) conferred an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree on National Assembly Speaker Won-shik Woo in recognition of his leadership in defending constitutional democracy, promoting justice, and advocating for marginalized communities. The ceremony took place at Yongbong Hall, with President Keun-bae Lee and senior university officials in attendance.
Speaker Woo was greeted by faculty and staff and entered the hall in academic regalia alongside President Lee and college deans. Attendees included members of the National Assembly, local government officials, and alumni leaders.
In his congratulatory remarks, President Lee praised Speaker Woo’s principled leadership in moments of national uncertainty, saying:
“In May 1980, CNU students and Gwangju citizens rose against authoritarian rule. Speaker Woo’s leadership continues that legacy with determination and vision.”
In his acceptance speech, Speaker Woo expressed his gratitude, saying:
“The strength to stand against martial law came from the people of Gwangju in May 1980. That experience shaped both me and our collective conscience. It is an honor to receive this recognition from a university so closely tied to Korea’s democratic movement.”
CNU described Speaker Woo as a model of philosophical leadership who has consistently put principles of justice and public service into practice.
