CNU, GIST, and KENTECH Join Forces to Lead AI-Based Regional Innovation

Chonnam National University (CNU), Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), and Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) have entered into a strategic partnership to tackle regional population decline and drive innovation through AI. Together, the three universities are launching the Gwangju AI Convergence Research Triangle and collaborating on the national Glocal University 30 initiative to foster talent, support local industry, and build a sustainable future for the Gwangju–Jeonnam region.

The memorandum of understanding was signed on May 8 at CNU by Presidents Keun-bae Lee (CNU), Ki-chul Lim (GIST), and Acting President Jin-ho Park (KENTECH), along with senior university administrators. The partnership reflects a shared vision of regional transformation through interdisciplinary AI research aligned with national priorities.

Key areas of cooperation include:

  ● Collaborative educational programs to nurture local talent
  ● Shared infrastructure and resources for regional education and research
  ● Joint research and development in emerging industries
  ● Support for startups, innovation, and job creation across the region

The agreement followed several months of working-level discussions and reflects the institutions’ long-term commitment to regional development. President Keun-bae Lee emphasized the importance of connecting advanced research to local challenges. President Ki-chul Lim noted GIST’s leadership in science and technology innovation, while Acting President Jin-ho Park highlighted KENTECH’s role in energy-focused research contributing to regional growth.
