A newly found news manux-script from student reporters of the CNU Press, which vividly recorded the situation in the wake of May 18 in 1980, are attracting great interest. It mainly covers activities of several CNU student clubs immediately before May 18.

The CNU Press and Broadcasting Center (Chief Editor: Professor Noh Shi-hoon) recently discovered the manux-script intended for broadcasting news in the course of office space maintenance. It was written by student reporters about the circumstances of May 15th and 16th, 1980.

This news manux-script was written by Cho Gyu-baek and Song Jae-hong student reporters of the former CNU Press and Broadcasting Center. These hand-written materials contain more detailed information compared to any other existing research and oral data.

The manux-script especially articulates that “Park Kwan-hyun, the President of the Student Council, wrote the statement with representatives of other colleges in the province.” It further states that “Professor Jung Ik-seop announced the declaration of the situation statement written in the temporary general meeting of the Faculty Council on the 13th” and “the crowd dissolved at 6:05 p.m. after an agreement negotiated with Professor Kim Tae-jin, the Director of Student Affairs and the CNU Committee Chairs of Professors’ Council with the provincial police.”

Regarding this material, Yoo Gyeong-nam (Researcher of the CNU May 18 Institute) said, “This data was recorded directly from the perspective of student reporters in May 1980. It contains not only the activities of students, but also contribution from professors. Therefore, it should be included in the official record of the May 18 Democratization Movement, which has been registered as Memory of the World, considering its historical significance, scarcity, authenticity, irreplaceability, and international value.”

In addition, among the materials found together, there are materials for events such as the National Literature Festival, which was held between the end of April and the beginning of May 1980. It is a collection of events which were sponsored by the CNU Student Council and hosted by RUSA, a student social science study group, Eolsam, a cultural activity circle, the Yongbong Literature Club, and the National Literature Society of students from the Department of Korean Language and Literature and the Department of Korean Education. These findings had remained unknown until the discovery of these materials since there is no similar record in the archived material of the Korea Democracy Foundation or the May 18 Institute.

In addition to the manux-script, a total of 104 pieces of other records of this time were found including, 61 pieces of documents related to May 18 and 43 photos, including a handout of the “National and Democratic Convention” and the “The First Declaration of the Current Situation.”

Professor Noh said, "We will confirm the value of these materials through a detailed verification process and research. As it is valuable data, we will make it available to members of the university and local residents in the future."
