The CNU College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (Dean: Professor Kim Tae-ho) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Cheong-gyeong, a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly vessel for marine and fisheries probes at Samwon Heavy Industries Ltd. located in Gunsan on December 13, 2021.

The ceremony was attended by Dean Kim, Professor Lee Ki-soo, the Director of the CNU Ship Training Operation Center, Han Chang-beom, the CEO of Samwon Heavy Industries, Ltd., Yoo Hee-chul, Vice President of Korea Maritime Technology, Inc., along with staff in charge of ship building, such as construction supervisors, builders, and supervisors.

CNU’s new marine and fishery research vessel will be built with a total project cost of 20.7 billion KRW and a capacity of 466 tons that can accommodate 32 crewmembers and investigators. It will use liquefied natural gas (LNG), an eco-friendly fuel.
The Cheong-gyong will be launched in November 2022 and will be used for domestic coastal marine research, aquatic resource research, and student training programs.

Dean Kim said, “Through the eco-friendly marine and fisheries research vessel equipped with the most advanced equipment, we will conduct research, investigation, and field training in the field of marine and fisheries sciences more safely and systematically. It will also greatly contribute to the government’s achievement of 2050 carbon neutrality as well as fostering future prospects in the field of marine and fisheries sciences, who will lead the new era of maritime and ocean research in the 21st century.”
