CNU announced that classes will begin for graduate students selected by LG Innotek Co. and enrolled in a unique new master
s degree program designed by CNU and LG Innotek to meet the company-specific business requirements. The company-customized degree program highlights a radical change in the relationship between academia and the corporate environment and opens up new windows of opportunity for companies looking to increase the immediate value of company-sponsored education programs. CNU is the first regional university which creates a company-customized degree program. LG Innotek Co. will recruit a certain number of graduate students who will work for the company after they complete the customized program. On October 21, the opening ceremony of
LG Innotek Technology Development Center at CNU
was held at Engineering Bldg. VI. Previous to the ceremony, CNU President Kang Jung Chaee and LG Innotek
s CEO Hur Young-ho had a meeting and agreed to create a customized degree program. In line with the agreement reached, both sides will sign an official pact for the degree program. The company-customized master
s degree program will be a unique corporation/academia alliance, which is designed to be a win/win situation for CNU students and LG Innotek. Talented senior students who wish to work for LG Innotek after they complete the master
s degree program will be recommended by CNU. The corporation will select less than 30 students through application screening and interview tests. The selected students will be granted tuition scholarships during the program period and will be employed by LG Innotek when they complete the course and earn master
s degrees. Since much of the course content is directly related to real work activities, students will be able to immediately use the knowledge gained during classes. At the same time, LG Innotek is able to offer an attractive education program critical to attracting and retaining qualified and talented employees. Since the program increases the immediate and long-term value of the employee for the company, the company can reduce time to be spent to train new employees. The corporation also can choose professors or lecturers for particular courses and will be quick to recognize the immediate value of offering their future employees the program customized to meet company-specific needs. CNU is working with LG Innotek on this program to be offered to senior students at the Division of Electronics, Computer & Information Engineering, Department of Materials Science & Engineering, and School of Mechanical Systems Engineering. After an experimental operation period, any students of the Engineering College can be admitted to the program. \"The idea of a university customizing course content to meet specific company needs is a significant departure from the traditional image of the university,\" said Lee Byong-taek, Dean of the College of Engineering. \"Thanks in great part to the flexibility the customized course content provides, degree customization is not only possible but it is actually changing the face of corporate education and helping companies gain more value from their education programs than ever before. The objective of the program is to foster well-qualified individuals equipped with strong competitiveness. We are currently discussing with another corporation in Gwangju and we expect many companies will participate in providing this program for their future employees.\" \"LG Innotek Co. is a leading maker of electronic components and defense products, including missile and underwater systems, radars, communication systems, command and control systems, avionics and information and electronic warfare systems. In the electronics field, its products include tuners, optical disc drive motors, inverters, converters, CT modules, surface acoustic wave filters and duplexers. Major products of the company are produced at the Gwangju Factory, which operates its R & D institute with over 300 workers. We look to work with CNU that could offer a degree based on real work. The University will offer the flexibility we need through customized-curricula and we can secure more excellent IT workers we need,\" said Chong Yong-seon, Managing Director of LG Innotek. CNU and LG Innotek Co. concluded an industrial-academic cooperation pact, which called for resource sharing and joint study for technology renovation and nurturing of the professionals, on September 10. Since then, both sides have been working together to launch this company-customized degree program.
