Honorary Doctorate Degrees Granted to Lee Ki-ho (Lawyer), Chung Bo-sung (Lawyer), and Chung Si-chae (Former Lawmaker)

On October 27, CNU granted its honorary doctorate degrees to Lee Ki-ho, Chung Bo-sung, and Chung Si-chae. President Kang Jung Chaee held a degree awarding ceremony at the reception room on the 5th floor of the University Administration Building at 5:30 p.m. and presented honorary doctorate degrees to them. Lee Ki-hong, 71, started his career as a lawyer in 1963. He has participated in democratic movements and rallies in protest against Korea-Japan summit talks, troop dispatching to Vietnam, the constitutional amendment for Park Jung-hee's third election, and Park's revitalizing reforms. In recognition of his dedication to human rights and social justice, he was named to receive an honorary doctorate degree. Lee has been well known as a reform-minded lawyer working for human rights. He took a lead in trying to pleading in defense of college students and prisoners of conscience, arrested for democratic movement participations. Under the Yushin (Park Jung-hee's revitalizing reform) constitution, Lee organized a national council for democracy recovery and led rallies for the abolition of the Yushin system. When May 18 democratic movement took place in 1980, he was submitted for trial by court-martial and had to serve a term of imprisonment. In August 1994, he participated in establishing the May 18 Memorial Foundation and served as the second-term executive director. Lee was the first class graduate from the College of Law at CNU and he passed the 8th state law examination in 1957. He worked as district public prosecutor in Chunchon, Gwangju and Cheju. Chung Bo-sung, 71, graduated from the College of Law at CNU in 1958 and passed the 9thstate law examination. Before he started his career as a lawyer in 1969, he had worked as a judge in many district courts. While he worked as a lawyer for thirty-five years, he took a lead in social activities for civil rights and the development of educational system. In recognition of his dedication to social justice, human rights movement, and the enhancement of legal cultures, he was selected to receive an honorary doctorate degree from CNU. He served as vice-president of the Korean Bar Association, He also assumed many important posts for Seoul Bar Association, Korean Legal Aid Corporation, and Korean Commercial Arbitration Board. He has made donations for CNU students many times and established his own scholarship funds to help students in financial needs. Chung Si-chae, 68, is working as president of the Jeollanamdo Council for Social Welfare. He is the first CNU graduate who became a minister. In recognition of his tremendous contributions to the national and regional development, CNU decided to award an honorary doctorate degree to him. Chung graduated from the College of Law in 1960 and passed the 13th state administrative officer examination in 1961. He served as the chief commissioner of Gwangju Police Agency, mayor of Gwangju City, and deputy governor of Jeollanamdo Province. He was elected as a lawmaker of the 11th, 12th, and 14th National Assembly. He has contributed to launching large scale projects such as Gwangyang Bay development plan, Mokpo port construction, and island development plan. His dedication to the national balanced development has been highly appreciated. Chung was president of the Law College Alumni Association from 1970 through 1992. He also made great contributions to the development of CNU and the Honam region by establishing the Law College Library and student's study rooms (Goshibang).
