CNU Drone Soccer Team Wins Second Place in Honam Tournament After Its Establishment 5 Months ago

CNU's drone soccer team took second place in the first official tournament it participated in withing five months of its establishment.

The CNU Drone Soccer Team, composed of CNU students, took second place in the 2021 Honam Drone Football Competition held in Gimje, Jeollabukdo, on February 27, with 16 teams from the Korea Drone Soccer Association. The CNU team achieved such an excellent results with overwhelming performances, some of which ended in scores of 9:0 and 15:1, and was at one point tied for seventh among the 37 teams in the third division of the league.

The CNU team consisted of Kang Hyo-chan (sophomore in the School of Mechanical Engineering), Song Min-hyuk (sophomore in the School of Mechanical Engineering), Yoon So-jung (senior in Industrial Engineering), and Han A-reum (senior in the Department of Communications), while Yang Seung-jun (graduate student in the Department of Communications) participated as a coach and player. Professor Cho Wang-ok (CNU LINC + Initiative) supervised the team and Sky-View, a drone education company, provided necessary technologies for drone production and maintenance, as well as competition operation tactics.

Drone soccer is a convergence sport using drones, a key icon of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and a point is gained when a drone, surrounded by carbon protective equipment, passes through the opponent's circular goal, the internal diameter of which is 60 cm. Five people make one team to share roles such as offensive and defensive positions, and one drone can be designated as a striker with tags to score goals.

In Korea, drone soccer was introduced in 2017 and about 300 teams are currently active in the league, from the first division of the national team to the third division of the general public. Only two teams, including the CNU team in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province are registered in the third division.
