CNU was finally selected for the Future-Leading Research and Development Project governed by South Jeolla Province.

CNU Professor Kang Ji-hoon (Department of Medical Engineering) proposed the Silver Healthcare Equipment (SHE) Support Center Project which was finally selected as the Future-Leading Research and Development Project supervised South Jeolla Province and cities and counties in it.

Accordingly, the project is expected to be of great help in the settlement of the rehabilitation hospital for the South Jeolla area, which is currently under construction at the CNU Kookdong Campus, and the cultivation of customized talents for rehabilitation medical services.

In particular, the project makes it possible to solve social problems in this region which has already entered the stage of an ultra-aging society along with Gyeongbuk (21.3%) and Jeonbuk (21.0%), as Jeonnam (23.5%) has the highest proportion of the elderly population in the nation. The project is also expected to improve the quality of life for the elderly population in the region by establishing a lively and supportive environment for seniors.

This project will be carried out by the professors and research fellows of the Faculty of Health Care Medical Engineering (Digital Health Care Major and Bio Health Care Major), the Department of Medical Engineering, and the Biomedical Engineering Cooperative Program at Chonnam National University. In addition, CNU will collaborate with Yeosu City to make this project a reality.

The planning committee has already been established, in which related organizations such as the Jeonnam Yeosu Industry-University Convergence Agency, the Korea Testing Laboratory, and M. I. One co., Ltd. participated. Also, an advisory committee including excellent domestic and foreign researchers will be established to discuss related issues and share various opinions and ideas through regular workshops.

Professor Kang, the senior director of the research, said, “Preparing for the era of ultra-aging will be enabled by resolving the blind spots of welfare through expansion of the foundation of local medical platforms through silver healthcare R&D planning for full-cycle health management from disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prognosis for elderly people. In addition, we will develop technology for elderly-friendly medical devices.”

In line with the state policy that emphasizes decentralization and balanced regional development, South Jeolla Province supports the project along with cities and counties in it to discover a new chance for regional-led R&D projects with feasibility and effectiveness to create future growth engines in the region.
