CNU students have published a research paper that verified the anti-inflammatory efficacy of natural extracts, and it has now become a hot topic.

The student research team of the CNU Laboratory Animal Medicine Laboratory (Department of Veterinary Medicine, Director: Professor Park Jong-hwan) proved that the extract of Artemisia scoparia, which has been used as a medicinal plant in the private sector, blocks the signaling mechanisms of inflammatory mediators NF-κB and NLRP3 inflammatory complexes. The phenomenon of inhibiting production was identified through cell and animal experiments.

This study is expected to open the possibility of developing health-functional foods as well as pharmaceuticals by verifying the anti-inflammatory signaling mechanism of Artemisia extract at the protein level and evaluating its efficacy through animal experiments.

The results of this study were published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (influence index: 3.690), an international journal of pharmacology.

The research team consists of graduate students (Ahn Jae-hoon) and undergraduate students (Park Ae-ryun, Song A-young, Kim Wan-gyu, and Je Chang-yoon of the Department of Veterinary Medicine), who conducted the entire research process of the experiment from cell culture to management and breeding of experimental animals (mice) during both semesters and vacations.

They were also recognized for their outstanding research ability by winning the top prize among 30 participating research teams at the 2020 Industry-Academic Convergence X-corps Festival hosted by the CNU University-Industry Liaison Office.

This research was conducted with the support of the CNU University-Industry Convergence Practical Research Group (Director: Professor Kang Hyun-wook) of the X-mind Corps Program hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the National Research Foundation.
