CNU has decided to build a virtual campus using a metaverse, which is emerging as the latest issue recently.

“Metaverse” is a compound word of “meta,” meaning virtual and abstract, and “universe,” meaning the space as a whole. It refers to a universe where reality and non-reality coexist. It shows biggest difference from virtual reality (VR) is that it presents interactive content that can be used for communication with others in the virtual environment.

President Jung recently launched the Metaverse Campus Planning Committee (Chairperson: Professor Joo Chung-min, Department of Communication) of which meetings and activities will be conducted in the virtual space. The committee will prepare for the realization and utilization of a metaverse campus step by step considering technical availability.

The CNU Metaverse Virtual Campus is expected to support lectures, classes, and seminars which will be conducted through bidirectional communication like in the real world, even in non-face-to-face environments such as during the COVID-19 era where physical and spatial restrictions exist or infectious diseases hinder gathering. The virtual campus will also allow a multitude of events such as festivals, entrance ceremonies, and graduation ceremonies.

CNU has furnished a foundation for education and research in the computer and software fields by launching the College of AI Convergence, establishing cutting-edge convergence departments, as well as by being selected as a software-oriented university for governmental projects. It is regarded as being prepared for new technologies such as the metaverse to be effectively utilized.

President Jung said, “The era of the metaverse that can overcome the limitations of reality is coming. We will actively utilize the metaverse to present a new educational paradigm and create a university culture that is different from the past.”
