Energy-Efficient Construction and Renovation Policy at Chonnam National University
Chonnam National University (CNU) enforces a policy to ensure that all new buildings and renovations comply with energy efficiency standards. The ongoing process of obtaining energy efficiency certification (Grade 1++) and Zero Energy Building (ZEB) certification for the CNU Medical Education Complex exemplifies this policy. These certifications are part of CNU’s efforts to minimize the environmental impact of its buildings and promote sustainable development.
Project Highlights: Energy Efficiency Standards: The Medical Education Complex is currently undergoing evaluation to achieve Energy Efficiency Certification (Grade 1++) and Zero Energy Building certification. The energy efficiency certification is being handled by the Korea Institute of Building Energy Technology, while the green building certification is overseen by Crebiz Certification.
Project Schedule and Adjustments: Initially scheduled for completion by November 2023, the project timeline has been extended to December 2023 due to delays in evaluation by the certification authorities. The extension ensures full compliance with energy efficiency standards and the successful completion of all necessary certifications.
Green Building Certification: CNU is committed to meeting not only energy efficiency standards but also green building standards. This includes implementing design and construction strategies that reduce energy consumption and promote sustainable building practices.
Sustainable Building Design: This project incorporates comprehensive design plans to meet both energy efficiency and green building certification standards, reflecting CNU’s long-term commitment to sustainable construction and environmental protection.
In addition to the Medical Education Complex, CNU follows a stringent green building certification process for all renovations and new constructions, ensuring that energy efficiency standards are thoroughly adhered to. By doing so, CNU takes a leading role in contributing to sustainable construction and environmental conservation.
Green building certification is not merely a formality but a rigorous process aimed at minimizing the overall environmental impact of buildings. The certification evaluates various areas, including land use and transportation, energy and environmental pollution, materials and resources, water cycle management, maintenance, ecological environment, and indoor environment. Only buildings that meet the stringent criteria in each of these areas are awarded a green building certification.
To achieve this certification, CNU prioritizes energy conservation and environmental protection from the design stage of each building. Special attention is given to maximizing the energy efficiency of the building, managing water resources effectively, and using environmentally friendly materials. Moreover, CNU adopts sustainable operational practices during the maintenance phase to minimize the building’s long-term environmental impact.
Through this process, CNU ensures that all its buildings are designed and operated with maximum energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, playing a key role in realizing a sustainable campus.
