Yeosu City Climate Change Adaptation Detailed Action Plan Evaluation and Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Reduction Local Action Plan, Public-Private-Academic Partnership Project

Chonnam National University collaborates with Yeosu City through the Jeonnam Green Environment Support Center to implement and evaluate detailed action plans for climate change adaptation and voluntary greenhouse gas reduction. This cooperative project brings together government, private sector, academia, and local communities to enhance resilience to climate-related disasters and support long-term carbon neutrality goals.

  1. Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Monitoring
Chonnam National University supports Yeosu City’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across public buildings, residential, commercial, and transportation sectors. Annual evaluations monitor progress, which has resulted in a reduction of 1,636,431 tons of CO2 to date.

  2. Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan and Evaluation
Following government guidelines, Yeosu City has developed detailed climate change adaptation strategies since 2014 and continuously conducts evaluations to reflect the evolving local needs. This plan includes specific strategies for responding to climate-related disasters, such as floods, effectively.

  3. 2050 Carbon Neutrality Goal
The Jeonnam Green Environment Support Center aids Yeosu City in establishing a mid- to long-term plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Through a cooperative network involving government, private, and academic sectors, this initiative aims to create systematic climate actions and sustainable environmental policies.

This cooperative project exemplifies Chonnam National University's commitment to addressing climate change disasters at both local and regional levels, strengthening disaster response capacities.

Carbon Neutrality Support Center

Chonnam National University actively collaborates with local government and community groups to participate in climate action planning. The university operates Carbon Neutrality Support Centers on its Gwangju and Yeosu campuses, playing a crucial role in promoting carbon neutrality and addressing climate change in the region.

1. Buk-gu Carbon Neutrality Support Center
The Buk-gu Carbon Neutrality Support Center was established at Chonnam National University’s Gwangju campus. Operated by the university's Management Research Institute, this center works closely with Buk-gu District Office to support the development and implementation of carbon neutrality plans, manage greenhouse gas emission statistics, and develop energy transition models. The center also collaborates with the local community to promote carbon neutrality practices and engage residents in climate action plans.

2. Yeosu Carbon Neutrality Support Center
The Yeosu Carbon Neutrality Support Center was established at Chonnam National University's Yeosu campus. The center is dedicated to supporting the transition of Yeosu into a carbon-neutral society by 2050, working in partnership with the city of Yeosu to develop comprehensive climate action plans and conduct research on energy transition. The center also contributes to Yeosu's efforts to become a leading carbon-neutral city and plays an active role in promoting international climate initiatives like COP33 (UN Climate Change Conference).

These two centers are key elements of Chonnam National University’s climate action plan, demonstrating the university’s commitment to collaborating with local government and community groups to address climate challenges and build a sustainable future.
