Alumni and Community, Immigrants and Refugees

Chonnam National University operates a variety of outreach programs aimed at supporting diverse community members, including alumni, local residents, immigrants, and refugees, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds. Although these groups are not distinctly categorized, the programs are designed to assist anyone in need, including alumni, local communities, and individuals facing social and economic hardships.

Through initiatives such as the ESG Management Insight Program, Environmental Education Center, Job Festa, Legal Clinic Services, and specialized programs for multicultural families and vulnerable youth, Chonnam National University demonstrates its commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities. These programs offer essential support, resources, and knowledge on topics ranging from environmental management and job preparation to legal aid and cultural adaptation.

In practice, Chonnam National University’s approach ensures that every member of society, regardless of background or status, has access to the skills and support needed to improve their quality of life and adapt to today’s complex challenges. By fostering an inclusive environment, these programs align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to quality education, decent work, and reducing inequalities. ESG Management Insight Program for Alumni and the Community

Chonnam National University’s Job Plus Center organized the ESG Management Insight Expert Training Program from July 17 to July 21, 2023, to enhance the employment competitiveness of its alumni and young local job seekers. This program focused on equipping participants with essential ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) knowledge and practical skills, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable management practices.

Program Overview and SDG Relevance: The program provided comprehensive training on ESG principles, including:

  • Understanding of K-ESG guidelines and broader ESG management principles.
  • Practical skills in project planning, report writing, and professional communication.
  • Guidance on organizational role compatibility and business etiquette.
  • Small group consulting with current industry professionals for personalized mentorship.

Through these modules, participants gained valuable insights and hands-on experience in sustainable management, aligning with SDGs such as Quality Education (SDG 4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Climate Action (SDG 13). This initiative contributes to regional development by supporting young job seekers in building sustainable career skills, ultimately fostering a resilient, sustainable economy within the community.

This program highlights Chonnam National University's dedication to supporting alumni and the local community in SDG-related education, empowering participants to apply responsible business practices in their future careers and positively impact both local and global sustainability efforts.

1-1 Training for Environmental Technicians (Air, Water, Waste)

This program trained 70 participants on air, water, and waste management from April to October 2023. It included 75 hours of online lectures covering pollution prevention technologies and environmental regulations. The training aimed to enhance job opportunities and environmental skills for university students and employees in environmental industries. Satisfaction was high, with 94.1% overall satisfaction. The program supports climate change mitigation by fostering expertise in environmental management.




1-2. Climate Protection Specialist Training [Professionals]

The Climate Protection Specialist Training for Professionals, conducted in August 2023, aimed to prepare Yeosu for hosting COP33 and to enhance climate change response by educating participants on carbon neutrality and greenhouse gas reduction. The program, organized by Jeonnam Green Environment Support Center and Yeosu YMCA, included 17 hours of training (6 hours online, 11 hours in-person) and was attended by 37 participants, including 17 instructors. With a satisfaction rate of 92%, the program significantly contributed to improving the teaching capabilities of local instructors and raising environmental awareness among citizens, supporting the goal of achieving 2050 carbon neutrality.



1-3.Climate Protection Specialist Training [Citizens]


The Climate Protection Specialist Training for Citizens was conducted from June 26 to July 31, 2023, to support Yeosu's bid for COP33 and promote carbon neutrality and greenhouse gas reduction. Organized by the Jeonnam Green Environment Support Center, the training included 18 hours of both online and in-person sessions, with 54 out of 60 participants completing the program. With a 92% satisfaction rate, the training improved participants' understanding of climate protection and prepared them to contribute to environmental movements and practices. The program also emphasized the role of citizens in achieving 2050 carbon neutrality.



1-4.2023 Environmental Monitoring Officials Capacity Building Training Report

The Environmental Monitoring Officials Capacity Building Training, held on April 28, 2023, aimed to enhance the expertise and job performance of local environmental officials in Jeollanam-do. The training covered key topics such as updates to environmental laws, inspection techniques for pollutant-emitting businesses, and response procedures for water pollution incidents. The program also included hands-on sessions on sampling methods for air, noise, and odor pollution. With around 70 participants, the training improved the officials' ability to oversee environmental issues and respond to pollution incidents effectively, contributing to better environmental protection in the region.



1-5.Inter-floor Noise Consultant Training Report

The Inter-floor Noise Consultant Training was conducted from June 7 to July 6, 2023, to prevent disputes and manage inter-floor noise issues in apartment complexes. The training targeted apartment management staff and residents, focusing on dispute prevention and management strategies. A total of 33 participants attended the 10-hour program, with 29 completing the course. The training emphasized the importance of proactive noise management, and participants expressed a high satisfaction rate (97%), with 94% finding the course useful for acquiring knowledge. There is a demand for more case studies on inter-floor noise dispute resolution.



1-6.Air Sector Environmental Officer Capacity Building Training Report

The Air Sector Environmental Officer Capacity Building Training was held from August 23 to 24, 2023, focusing on improving the understanding and management of air pollution control measures in the Yeosu Industrial Complex. The training, consisting of six lectures over 14 hours, was attended by 11 participants from companies like BASF Korea, Kumho P&B, and Lotte Chemical. The program covered topics on emission limits and practical exercises on monitoring air pollutants. Participants expressed high satisfaction (100%) and indicated the need for additional practical training. The course is expected to contribute to better compliance with air quality regulations and ESG management.



1-7.2023 Climate Crisis Response Carbon Neutral Environmental Instructor Training Report

The 2023 Climate Crisis Response Carbon Neutral Environmental Instructor Training was held from July 4 to October 17, 2023, at Chonnam National University's Yeosu Campus. The program aimed to train citizens, university students, and instructors as carbon-neutral environmental educators. A total of 60 participants attended, with 44 completing the course. The course included 12 sessions, with participants being appointed as climate crisis and carbon-neutral instructors in local schools. The training also supported the promotion of COP33 (UN Climate Change Conference) and emphasized the importance of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 in the Jeonnam region.



1-8.2023 E-People (Environmental Talent) Training Report

The 2023 E-People (Environmental Talent) Training Program targeted environmental studies students and graduates from Jeonnam, Gwangju, and Jeju regions, offering employment mentoring and career exploration activities. The program took place at Chonnam National University’s Gwangju campus from August 7 to 11, 2023, for a total of 5 days, with 30 participants completing the training. Participants engaged in job preparation lectures, company tours, and mentoring with industry professionals to enhance their employment capabilities in the environmental field. A satisfaction survey revealed that 96.7% of attendees were satisfied with the program and expressed interest in participating again.


1-9.Small-Scale Air Pollution Emitting FacilityEnvironmental Manager Capacity Building Training Report

The Small-Scale Air Pollution Emitting Facility Environmental Manager Capacity Building Training was held from September 20 to December 28, 2023, targeting 4th and 5th-class air pollution-emitting facilities in the Jeonnam region. A total of 53 participants, including environmental managers and citizens, attended the program, with 45 successfully completing the training. The course covered IoT device operation and air pollution control facilities, improving participants' skills in managing air pollution prevention systems. The satisfaction rate was 98%, with 94% of attendees finding the program helpful for their job prospects.



1-10.Mobile Carbon Neutral Environmental Education Report

The Mobile Carbon Neutral Environmental Education was conducted on October 16, 2023, at Gwangyang Baekwoon High School for 88 first-year students. The program included 2 hours of theoretical and practical education on climate crisis awareness, carbon neutrality, and eco-friendly practices like creating zero-waste shampoo bars. The training aimed to enhance students' understanding of carbon neutrality and environmental sustainability. Overall, the program received an 81% satisfaction rate, though some participants found the content similar to previous education. The initiative contributes to fostering ecological awareness and promoting practical carbon neutrality efforts in daily life.



1-11.2023 Emissions Trading Scheme Basic Training Report

From November 9 to December 28, 2023, the Jeonnam Green Environment Support Center conducted a Carbon Emissions Trading Scheme training for 41 participants, including representatives from carbon-emitting companies and citizens. A total of 34 participants completed the course. The training was delivered through online video lectures, and participant satisfaction was rated at 97%. The training aimed to strengthen companies' capabilities in response to the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and contributed to achieving greenhouse gas reduction targets while advancing ESG management practices in businesses.



1-12.Advanced Training for Climate Protection Experts (Environmental Instructors) Report


From November 27 to December 6, 2023, advanced training was conducted for 16 graduates of the Carbon Neutral Environmental Instructor Training course. The training focused on improving teaching skills, lesson planning, presentation design, and use of teaching materials. Participants received hands-on feedback to enhance their instructional abilities. While satisfaction with the course was high, some participants expressed disappointment over the shortened training duration. This training is expected to further support efforts for the 33rd UN Climate Change Conference (COP33) and promote climate protection activities in everyday life.




1-13.Climate Protection Ecocity Architecture Specialist (Basic) Training Report

From December 13 to 21, 2023, a 10-hour, 5-session training was conducted in Yeosu, targeting 69 participants, including citizens, public officials, and construction industry professionals. The course focused on eco-friendly urban architecture, carbon-zero housing, and green building standards. A total of 50 participants completed the course, with a satisfaction rate of 88%. The training aimed to foster an understanding of ecological urban planning and contribute to Yeosu's goal of becoming a leading city in climate change response and sustainable urban development.

JOB FESTA for Employment and Career Support

Chonnam National University hosted the "2023 Chonnam National University JOB FESTA" on September 19, 2023, aimed at providing valuable employment and career information to recent graduates and local young job seekers. Organized by the University’s Job Plus Center in collaboration with various departments, including the Office of International Affairs, Graduate School Innovation Center, and external partners such as Jeonnam Technopark, this event was held at the 5.18 Plaza on campus.

Over 4,000 university students and local youth attended the event to gain insights into job opportunities and career pathways. The event featured more than 60 participating companies, including public corporations like the Gwangju Metropolitan City Tourism Corporation, Korea Forest Welfare Institute, and major corporations such as Kia, Lotte, and POSCO, as well as distinguished local companies. The companies provided company information, hiring details, and on-site consultations to connect with prospective talents.

Through initiatives like JOB FESTA, Chonnam National University actively supports regional community development by offering employment-related educational outreach to both its alumni and the broader community. This program aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8, which promotes decent work and economic growth, by enhancing career readiness and providing valuable resources to young job seekers in the community.

Outreach Legal Service

Chonnam National University Legal Clinic provides free legal consultation services, reaching out to underprivileged and local residents in need of legal assistance. This service has significantly contributed to resolving long-standing issues faced by residents who lacked legal knowledge. The consultations cover everyday legal disputes, such as issues regarding unpaid bills at a restaurant, permission to cross private property, and the use of farmland access roads. Residents have expressed great satisfaction with the support they received.

This free consultation, particularly for residents in areas with limited legal infrastructure, serves as a vital basic service for the underprivileged to resolve their legal problems. Moving forward, Chonnam National University plans to expand its legal consultation services to include public interest litigation support.

Bilingual Study Room for Multicultural Family Students

Chonnam National University’s Global Education Institute has been providing education in reading, writing, and speaking in the native languages of parents, including Vietnamese, to around 100 students from multicultural families in 7 different languages and 15 classes. Additionally, the institute offers special activities such as physical education, art, gayageum, haegeum, cello, and flute lessons.

Furthermore, Chonnam National University students have participated in learning mentoring programs, and there have been volunteer activities focused on teaching Korean to immigrant students.

The Bilingual Study Room is part of the Educational Internationalization Special Zone project and has been in operation for three years since 2021 through a partnership with the Yeosu Office of Education.

Dream Growth Camp

The Global Education Center at Chonnam National University held a 'Youth Dream Growth Camp' targeting young people from educationally underprivileged groups.
The Youth Dream Growth Camp is a residential mentoring education program designed to enhance the global competencies of local youth, which included career and major experiences with student mentors. The program was filled with various activities such as 'Me, Myself, and I' with native speaker instructors, career special lectures by professional instructors, majors and special activities taught by the mentors themselves, and group tasks such as visiting campus institutions and carrying out missions.

Educational Project for Children from Vulnerable Communities in the Local Area

The "2023 CNU Round-Up Class" program was planned under the leadership of the Student Affairs at Chonnam National University to provide tailored educational support services for children from vulnerable communities within the local area. The aim of this program was to reduce educational disparities within the community and to provide children with better learning opportunities to enhance their academic achievements.

The program ran for a total of 8 months, from June 7, 2023, to January 20, 2023. During this period, 35 participating university students and 12 child welfare educators supported the children's learning through various educational activities. The university students utilized their academic knowledge and experience to provide tailored educational guidance to the children, focusing on motivating and enhancing the children’s learning abilities.

Medical Volunteer Service for Medically Underserved Populations
 

Chonnam National University provided health check-ups and medical services to international students. These services included consultations, blood pressure and blood sugar tests, IV treatments, ultrasound exams, orthopedic consultations, and more. Additionally, personalized health management was supported through further medical consultations when necessary. These efforts significantly contributed to identifying and preventing diseases at an early stage for students with limited access to healthcare.

Such medical outreach plays a crucial role in caring for the health of international students, and Chonnam National University remains committed to safeguarding their well-being through ongoing efforts.

Migrant Worker Health Promotion Program

The Global Diaspora Research Institute at Chonnam National University, in collaboration with the Gwangju Workers' Health Center, has been engaged in various activities to promote the health and prevent diseases of migrant workers. These efforts aim to help migrant workers settle successfully in the community and lead healthy lives.

Key activities include:

  • Collaboration for Health Protection and Occupational Disease Prevention: Joint efforts to prevent occupational diseases and protect the health of migrant workers.
  • Policy Development for Improving Quality of Life: Joint development of policies to enhance the quality of life for migrant workers.
  • Academic, Cultural Activities, and Information Exchange: Continuous academic, cultural activities, and information exchange related to migrant worker health.
  • Other Collaborative Activities: The two institutions have carried out various health-related support activities for migrant workers through mutual cooperation.
