3. (Medically underserved areas) Medical Volunteer Work in Gaegado, Heuksan-myeon, Sinan County
Gaegado, located in Heuksan-myeon, Sinan County, faces a shortage of dental care personnel, with only public health physicians available at the local health center to provide basic medical services. Consequently, residents often receive only simple treatments on the island and must travel to Mokpo for the majority of their healthcare needs.
To address this gap, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the Chonnam National University Graduate School of Dentistry visited Gaegado, an area with limited medical services, to offer dental care and oral hygiene education to its residents.
4. (Medically underserved areas) Volunteer Group 'Yakseok' Summer Medication Volunteer Activity in Wando
The volunteer group 'Yakseok' from the pharmacy college, led by President Jiyoung Yu, a fifth-year pharmaceutical science student, and advised by Young-jun Im, conducted summer medication volunteer activities in Donggori, Sinji-myeon, Wando-gun. This area is not subject to the medical-pharmacy division system, allowing pharmacists to prescribe medications in the absence of doctors.
In Donggori, where no hospitals are available and pharmacists are permitted to prescribe medications directly, 'Yakseok' enabled 19 senior pharmacists to provide prex x-scriptions for approximately 170 residents. Meanwhile, around 50 student members assisted by dispensing medications based on these prex-x-scriptions. They also offered over-the-counter drugs and provided medication consultations, which included guidance on proper medication use and necessary precautions.

7. Chonnam National University Smoking Cessation Program
Chonnam National University has been actively engaging in various activities to create a smoke-free environment. The university recruits anti-smoking supporters to conduct anti-smoking campaigns and promotional activities both on and off-campus and operates anti-smoking clubs to foster a smoke-free atmosphere. Additionally, it provides smoking cessation education and has conducted smoking surveys among the Yeosu Campus members to understand the smoking prevalence and use the data in smoking prevention efforts.
The university hosts education sessions led by external experts on smoking prevention and collaborates with the Yeosu City Public Health Center to educate on quitting smoking, alcohol, and habitual drug use, distributing materials to support health promotion. It also organizes anti-smoking competitions, registers and supports individuals in smoking cessation clinics, and promotes team coaching and anti-smoking club teams to support its members' quit-smoking efforts.
These initiatives are part of Chonnam National University's efforts to spread a non-smoking culture and improve the health and well-being of its community, demonstrating a continuous commitment to creating a smoke-free environment and preventing smoking among its members.

Activities
- Conducting on-campus anti-smoking promotions and campaigns
- Creating diverse and original online and offline anti-smoking promotions each month based on designated themes
- Operating a non-smoking club and establishing a non-smoking campus environment (activities of non-smoking aides)
9. Smoking Status Survey
Chonnam National University has conducted a smoking survey to understand the current smoking situation. This measure aims to collect detailed information on specific smoking behaviors to foster a smoke-free culture within the campus. The university plans to use these insights to initiate the planning and implementation of effective smoking cessation strategies. The ultimate goal of this survey is not only to assess the current smoking scenario but also to identify specific needs and areas where intervention is necessary, thereby promoting health and wellness among students, faculty, and staff.
10. Free health screening
Chonnam National University takes a proactive approach to healthcare by offering comprehensive medical checkups aimed at safeguarding the health of its college students and mitigating the spread of infectious diseases within the academic community. These health screenings are meticulously designed to cater to the needs of various groups within the university, including freshmen who are new to the campus environment, students who live in dormitories and are therefore in close quarters with others, and the entire student body enrolled at the university.
Recognizing the importance of regular health assessments for its staff, the university also extends its health care initiatives to its employees. Non-office staff are eligible for annual cancer screenings and general health checkups, acknowledging the potential risks associated with their roles. Office workers, on the other hand, are provided with these vital health services once every two years, ensuring ongoing health monitoring. To support staff participation in these critical health maintenance activities, the university grants paid leave for medical checkup appointments, emphasizing its commitment to the well-being of its entire community.
This structured health management strategy not only demonstrates Chonnam National University's dedication to fostering a healthy campus but also reinforces its role in promoting public health awareness and prevention strategies among its students and staff.
