Four CNU Researchers Selected as the Winners of the MOST’s Grant for Young Scientists - Winners to Receive 530 Million Won of Government Subsidies for the Next Three Years

Prof. Han Yeon-soo in the Department of Applied Plant Science, Prof. Kim Nak-sung of Medical Science Research Center, Kim Sun-ee, researcher of Biotechnology Research Institute, and Lee Jin-ha, researcher of Engineering Research Institute, have been selected as the winners of the government grant for 2004 Young Scientist Grant Program, managed by the Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST). They will receive 530 million won (approx. $460,000) for the next three years from the MOST. The MOST’s Young Scientist Grant Program aims to help outstanding young scientists who made excellent R&D achievements and who will play a central role in leading the nation’s scientific development. The program provides research support to promising young faculty members or researchers in the early stages of academic careers. A total of 639 proposals from 118 universities had been submitted for support. Among them, 63 proposed research projects from 31 universities were finally selected. CNU was ranked second with Korea University, Yonsei University and Hanyang University after Seoul National University in the number of selected projects. Prof. Han Yeon-soo will be awarded 235 million won for three years for his proposed research on “Function identification of 14-3-3 Proteins and CD81 in the midgut and salivary glands of the malaria mosquito Anopheles.” Prof. Kim Nak-sung will conduct a research project regarding to basic helix-loop-helix proteins (bHLH) and HLH transcription factors with the funds of 196 million won for three years. Lee Jin-ha, researcher of Engineering Research Institute, will be awarded 25 million won for a year for the research project on Sucrose Phosphorylase. Prof. Kim Do-man in the School of Biological Sciences and Technology will cooperate for the project. Kim Sun-ee, researcher of Biotechnology Research Institute, will conduct a study on the inhibition mechanism of SAG-inducing Parkinson
s disease with Prof. Park Hee-se in the School of Biological Sciences and Technology. For this project, 75 million won will be provided for three years.
