The Student Council of Chonnam National University (President Moon Yong-deuk) and Gwagju-Jeonnam Solidarity for the Peace in Northeast Asia Northeast Asia (Representative Im Chae-wan, CNU Professor) have decided to co-host the 1st Northeast Asian Youth Forum on Peace at CNU’s International Conference Bldg. from July 4 through 11. The Northeast Asian Youth Forum on Peace is a unique youth event, which brings together college-aged young people from four different countries in Northeast Asia to discuss cultural, global, and security issues and international understanding. The Forum includes social events such as local excursions to May 18 National Cemetery, Gwangju City Hall, Sosaewon, and cultural performances including pottery-making. This event aims to empower young people four different nations in Northeast Asia to actively participate in the shaping of Northeast Asia and the society in which they live. A total of 50 youths from Russia, China, Japan, and Korea are invited to the forum. The participants will exchange their viewpoints on war and conflicts in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia through seminars, presentations, and discussions for eight days. “Korea is the only remaining divided country on earth. Therefore Koreans especially desire for peace on the Peninsula. The peace on the Korean Peninsula can be maintained on the basis of Northeast Asian countries’ cooperation. We are sure that this event will give opportunities for youth participants to realize the significance of Korean security and to narrow the gaps of their viewpoints. Young people intend to make their voices heard in the forum. We would especially like to raise the participants
peace awareness and understanding about the situation in Northeast Asia during the event. We do hope this event will develop into regional and national alliances for the peace and security in Northeast Asia,” said Prof. Im Chae-wan, Director of the Forum. ∵ Event Schedule ⊂ July 4 쭯 Registration, Community games, leisure time ⊂ July 5 쭯 Opening ceremony (9:30 a.m.), Orientation (10 a.m.), Seminar (1 p.m.), Excursion to May 18 National Cemetery (2 p.m.), Visit to Gwangju City Hall and City Assembly (5 p.m.) ⊂ July 6 쭯 Seminar (9 a.m.-11 a.m.), Cultural experience (Korean etiquettes, 11 a.m.), Excursion to Sunamsa Temple and Nakan Fortress (1 p.m.) ⊂ July 7 쭯 Cultural experience (pottery-making, 9 a.m.), Excursion to Sosaewon (12 p.m.), Korean movie watching (3 p.m.), Special lecture on Pungmul(traditional Korean folk art, involving a community-wide drumming, singing, dancing, and playing, 5 p.m.) ⊂ July 8 쭯 Seminar (9 a.m.), Excursion to Oriental Brewery (OB) Co., Ltd.
