Prof. Kim Do-man, 42, in the School of Biological Sciences and Technology, has won the 2004 Sanmi Club Award in the division of the JMB’s Outstanding Paper Award from the Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology (KMB), the largest single microbiology and biotechnology membership organization in Korea. Membership has grown from a few scientists in 1973 to over 2,000 members today. KMB represents more than 10 divisions of microbiological and biotechnological specializations. The mission of the Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology is to promote the microbiological sciences and biotechnological applications. The KMB publishes English professional journal, named Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology (JMB).The KMB honors JMB papers that exemplify the highest standards in technical contribution and exposition. This year, Prof. Kim has been selected and honored in recognition of his contribution to the quality development of the JMB with his outstanding research papers, cited many times at the science citation index journals. Prof. Kim, leading the Laboratory of Functional Carbohydrate Enzymes and Microbial Genomics (http://altair.chonnam.ac.kr/~carboenz), has made tremendous achievements in bioengineering division. He has presented about 30 treatises in academic journals including 20 treaties published in the SCI journals. Chonnam National University, Kangnung National University and Sejong University recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Enabling Grid for E-Science in Europe (EGEE) research team to create a joint research team and participate in the EGEE project. The joint research team, led by Prof. Kim Se-yong of Sejong University and Prof. Kim Do-man of CNU, established a memorandum of understanding with the EGEE project team in order to cooperate for building a distributed computing infrastructure strategy. Based on the memorandum signed, the CKSC team will conduct a research project of “A Study on the Utilization of the E.U.’s DataGrid Environments for High-Energy Physics and Bio Informatics.” The project will be sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology for the next four years. The Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology is devoted to the advancement and dissemination of scientific knowledge concerning microbiology, biotechnology, and related academic disciplines. It is an international English journal published by the Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology (KMB) and distributed by Springer-Verlag worldwide, and covers all the scientific and technological aspects of microbiology in general, physiology and metabolism, environmental microbiology, molecular microbiology, enzymology and enzyme engineering, fermentation technology, plant and animal cell cultures, bioprocess engineering, and other related fields. In 1994, the JMB was enlisted in the Science Citation Index Expanded and in 1998 enlisted in the SCI.
