Last year, CNU received a top prize for information protection from the Ministry of Information and Communication. The award was given to the university for its contribution to preparing effective measures against possible Internet-infiltration accidents, including hacking and computer virus spread, and actively fostering professional manpower in the information protection sector. Since 2002, the ministry has granted the prizes to financial institutions, Internet communication suppliers, general companies and universities in an effort to encourage their self-supporting activities to protect information and boost enterprises’ investment in the sector.
CNU again boasts off its top-rated power for information protection at the 1st Anti-hacking Confrontation Contest, co-hosted by the Korea Information Security Agency (KISA) and the Ministry of Information and Communication.
Hwang Hyun-wook, researcher of Linux Security Research Center (http://lsrc.jnu.ac.kr), won the grand prize at the contest.
As the society has entered into the digital age, new types of social problems have emerged, such as the leaking of personal information, misuse of the IT system, and worldwide computer hacking via the Internet. In an effort to prevent the invasion of hacking programs, the KISA has decided to host the anti-hacking contest in cooperation with the related ministry.
About 870 individuals participated in the contest. Among the contestants, Hwang Hyun-wook received high points in every competition category including cracked system analysis and malicious code analysis, etc.
The contestants had to demonstrate their abilities to analyze the situation of computer system invasion and discover how the system was hacked. They should figure out appropriate measures to prevent data outflow and update the anti-hacking system to prevent a recurrence of the dangerous incursion. All of these countermeasures had been tested at the contest.
CNU’s Linux Security Research Center (Director: Prof. Noh Bong-nam, the Dept. of Electronics Computer & Information Engineering, College of Engineering) has developed a large number of Linux-version software in order to enhance the Internet security, which have been funded by the Ministry of Information and Communication. In order to drive the growth and development of leading edge Information Technology Research (ITR) at the University, the Ministry of Information and Communication has been providing financial support for the selected research centers. The Center has played a leading role in transferring new technologies to industrial companies, which greatly contributed to the development of Linux industry in Korea.
