Twenty-one foreign students visited CNU to get a first-hand experience of Korean culture. The participants from Japan, China, and Russia joined the CNU's Summer Program, which was held at Seminar Room II of the International Conference Bldg. from July 20 to July 27. Participants included nine students from Tokyo Gakugei University and Saga University in Japan, nine students from Zhongshan University and Fudan University in China, and three more students from Vladivostok State University of Economics in Russia.
A group of experts on Korean history and culture as well as politics and economics conducted the classes with printed materials given to participants. Prof. Ahn Byong-kyu of English Education offered a Korean language (Hangul) course and Prof. Sohn Yong-yeop of Economics taught Korean economics to the students. Prof. Kook Min-ho of Sociology presented a course on Korean society and Prof. Kim Bong-joong of History conducted a Korean history course.
During the program, participants were allowed to stay at the university dorms. Besides the academic activities, various other activities including field trips, performances, and lectures by guest speakers were offered. They could learn about Korean culture by direct and actual experience through on-the-spot lectures such as the class on Korean traditional food, presented by Emeritus Professor Kim Gyong-ae in the Department of Home Economics Education. Participants also could share experience with the members of the students' clubs, such Samulnori (percussion music) Club, Korean Classical Music Club, Mukhyang (calligraphic works) Club, Tal (Korean traditional masks) Club, and Taebaek Club, etc.
Participants could enhance their knowledge on Korea and Jeonnam province through field trips to Nakan Fortress, Songkwang-sa Temple, and Bosung (known for green tea production).
CNU will continually try to organize this summer session program annually and improve it in terms of both quality and quantity, since the program could be effective in boosting Korea's and CNU's overseas images.
