Tuition costs for CNU students will remain unchanged for the second semester of the 2004 academic year. The University Administration would raise tuition fees by 4-5 percent, but the student representative’s meeting with Dean Kim Hyun-tae, representing the university authority has resulted in the tuition freeze. Moon Yong-deuk, President of the CNU Student Council, asked to continue the tuition freeze for the fall semester of 2004 and obtained a satisfactory result that the tuition rates will remain unchanged. Besides this, the University decided to accept the demands of the student council such as library facility improvement, student participation in institutional decision making including tuition fee control, budget expansion for the student council, the establishment of a special committee for student employment, financial aids, overseas training programs, and sports center construction, etc. “Compared with other national universities, CNU’s tuition fee rates are comparatively low. Considering the burdens to be imposed on parents due to raised tuition fees, we decided to continue the tuition freeze for the fall semester. The student council is led by non-activists who focus more on tuition fees, welfare and other campus issues rather than political issues. It also makes efforts to strengthen students’ competitiveness. We had to consider students’ efforts and decided to accept their demands,” said Kim Hyun-tae, Dean of University Planning & Cooperation. Kim said, “We expect the relationship between the university administration and the student body would move from mutual confrontation to accommodation through conversations. I am sure this change will produce CNU’s rapid progress.”
