The Special Crops Research & Development Center at CNU (Director: Prof. Chung Sun-ju in the Dept. of Horticulture, Division of Applied Plant Science, College of Agriculture & Life Sciences) opened its newly-built greenhouse complex. The glass greenhouse, built with 368 million won, is operated with an automatic control system. It is a 282 pyong (one pyong equals 3.3 square meters) building that will provide a boost a plant breeding, biotechnology and pathology programs in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences as well as in the surrounding research and commercial community. It is a glass greenhouse with extra-wide panes of tempered glass. The building has three automatic controlling rooms with ever-changing environmental conditions and five different areas for management, machinery, and preparatory work. The computerized greenhouse controls and facilities are operated depending on the modules, designed to be automatically controlled for temperature and light. The appropriately designed greenhouse will serve as educational and research tools for full-scale experiments in fully functioning, to meet the diversity and complexity of current research demands. The Special Crops Research & Development Center was designated as the agriculture specialization program provider by the government in 1997. Since then, the Center has received 4-500 million won a year from Rural Development Administration for its research projects on plants such as rice, barley, and pears.
