Prof. Chung Hee-jong in the Dept. of Food Science & Technology was named as the 2004 honorary inhabitant of Damyang-gun County and received the Award on May 3 at Chusong Stadium. Prof. Chung has been exerting all-out efforts to commercialize bamboo products, which are expected to accelerate the promotion of the county economy. The Special Award has been presented annually to a non-resident of the County who had made a great contribution to the development of Damyang. At the ceremony celebrating the day of Damyang Inhabitants, Prof. Chung was awarded. Since 1994, Chung has been actively participating in bamboo-related research projects. He has developed bamboo leaf tea, made of young bamboo leaves containing much vitamin C, grape sugar, fruit sugar, and potassium. He also succeeded in developing bamboo leaf Kimchi and bamboo green tea. He has rendered related technical services to local companies and contributed to establishing a bamboo leaf processing plant in Damyang. With the development of bamboo leaf tea and Kimchi, the County of Damyang expects to overcome the limitations of bamboo industry and seeks for the ways to industrialize various bamboo products.
