As the presidential commission for the establishment of cultural capital was launched, public interests in Gwangju City and Honam culture have been increasing. Under this situation, research institutes at CNU have been conducting a research project to make a synthesis of information on Honam culture from the prehistoric age through today. The database, to be named “Honam Culture Information System,” will be built up in the immediate future. CNU’s Honam Culture Research Institute and the Institute of Humanities held a conference for the funded project second-year report of ‘the Research Group for the Investigation of Human Culture Information and the Development of Culture Information System’. Cholla Culture Research Institute and the Humanities Research Institute at Chonbuk National University also participated in this project. Prof. Yoon Pyong-hyun, the principal investigator of the research group, presented the research results to the attendees in the conference, which was held at CNU’s Yongbong Culture Hall. The research project was selected to be funded by Korea Research Foundation in 2002. The second-year of the project started in August 2003 and continues to July 2004. Over seventy researchers are involved in this project. The mission of the project can be summarized as: - Sub-categorization of the cultural aspects into eleven sections: antiquities, history, language, literature, thoughts, music, arts, food, housing, banquets, and festivals - Collection of cultural properties and materials in the eleven different aspects - Analysis of the mutual relations among the aspects - Establishment of Honam Culture Information System (HCIS) in order to identify the Honam culture In the first-year, the project group focused on the investigation and collection of related materials. In the second-year period, cultural contents will be developed based on the investigation and the information database will be established. In the following year, a cultural map will be completed based on the web GIS and the Honam Culture Information System will be established. When we use a search engine, we can get comprehensive information on the designated word including the area, regional characteristics, related individuals and their careers, performances, and historical recognitions, from the database. The research group reported that about 120,000 cultural contents out of the total (150,000) have been encoded. When the project is completed, the wide-ranging information database on Honam culture will surely contribute to the development of Honam community study. The huge database on Korean culture can be built up on the basis of the achievements of this project. In order to reduce errors in the process of building up HCIS in the following year, a mock information system focusing on the Naju cultural contents will be established by May 2004.
