CNU professors edged out grant applicants from other regional universities at the 2004 grant competition for regional scientists, administered and funded by the Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST).
According to the announcement of the MOST, 1,656 applicants from 162 universities nationwide submitted their project proposals for the 2004 Regional Scientist Support Program. The Committee for the Basic Science Development reviewed the proposals and selected 361 applicants from 95 universities (21.8% of the total applications) as new state-funded projects. Among 95 universities, CNU stands first on the list of the selected researchers along with Pusan National University. Nineteen professors have been selected to be awarded grants for 1-3 years from this year. A total of 1.04 billion won ($910,000) will be provided for three years to CNU. For the year of 2004, 460 million won will be provided. Besides the new projects, the MOST selected fourteen on-going projects of CNU researchers as its funding projects. 320 million won will be provided for the fourteen projects this year.
The MOST has supported innovative research projects that strengthen the regional science and technology sectors. The primary mission of the Regional Scientist Support Program, launched in 2000, is to provide funding and a wide range of assistance to regional science and technology development to boost the quality of life for regional residents. The MOST accomplishes this mission by providing research grants to selected professors from local provinces for their innovative research projects. The program also aims to train science and technology man-power in local provinces.
