Seven CNU People Take Seats in National Assembly

In the April 15 general elections for the 17th National Assembly, seven CNU people including Prof. Jee Byong-moon were elected. Seven winners of the general elections are Kang Ki-jeong (CNU alumnus), Kim Ae-sil (former professor), Woo Yoon-keun (alumnus), Lee Young-ho (former professor), Lee Jung-il (alumnus), Jee Byong-moon (current professor), and Choi Jae-chun (alumnus). Prof. Jee Byong-moon, currently teaching at the Dept. of Political Science, College of Social Sciences, has been leading diverse social movements including the enactment of citizen summon ordinance. He launched a public signature-collecting drive urging the enactment of the local government ordinance and about 19,000 citizens joined the movement. It was the first achievement in Korea which would surely bring about clean politics. Prof. Jee expressed his thanks to his colleagues, students, senior school mates, and the university administrative staff members for their encouragement and support. “I will exert my utmost effort to realize clean politics in our nation and I will also contribute to the development of CNU. Before I join the 17th National Assembly, set to open late next month, I will fulfill my duty as professor to make classes done right as scheduled for the school affairs,” said Prof. Jee. Uri Party candidate Kang Ki-jeong, from the Buk-gu Gap constituency in Kwangju, won the election. He entered CNU in 1982 and was a comrade in the democracy movement while he was a college student. After his years of imprisonment, he received his bachelor’s degree in 1991. He earned a master’s degree from CNU Graduate School of Public Administration. He served as an advisory committee member for the Presidential Council of the National Balanced Development. He also assumed the position of national representative of Korean Youth Association. Kim Ae-sil, proportional representative in the Grand National Party, is the first female doctor in economics in Korea. She joined the CNU faculty in 1978 and taught students before 1980. She moved to Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Kim’s election was well predicted as she was designated the first of the party’s proportional representatives. Woo Yoon-keun, Uri Party candidate from the Gwangyang-Gurye constituency, was elected to the National Assembly. He entered the Department of Law at CNU in 1979. He passed the 32nd state-run law examination and has been engaged in legal circles. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees from CNU’s law department. He serves as a lawyer of European & Russian Law Firm and a committee member of the National Personnel Committee. He is also an adjunct professor of CNU’s Law College. Lee Young-ho, Uri Party candidate from the Gangjin-Wando constituency, won the election. He led the BK21 project for CNU as a renowned specialist in fishery industry and technology. He established the ‘Korean Institute of Food Industry’ in Daegu-myon, Gangjin-gun and has devoted himself to the development of fishery industy and technology. Lee Jung-il, Millennium Democratic Party candidate from the Haenam-Jindo constituency, completed CNU’s CEO Training Program at the Graduate School of Business Administration. He succeeded in taking a seat at the National Assembly again. While he worked as a representative of the 16th National Assembly, he was a member of the agriculture & fishery committee. Jee Byong-moon, Uri Party candidate from the Namgu constituency in Gwangju City, was elected to the new National Assembly. He is a CNU graduate from the Department of Economics. He earned his master’s degree from the Department of Political Science at CNU. He is co-representative of the Citizens’ Solidarity for Political Reforms. He also serves as vice-president of the Korean Association of International Studies and as president of Honam Association of Political Science Studies. He works as a member of the Governmental Innovation Project Committee, member of the Presidential Council for Policy Planning, and as vice-president of the Korean Association for Local Autonomy Systems. Another election winner Choi Jae-cheon is a Uri Party candidate from the Seongdong Gap constituency in Seoul. He entered the Department of Law in 1982 and received his master’s and doctoral degrees from the same department. He is representative of Hangang Legal Corporation. He worked as a general counsel for the Seongdong-gu district office. Many publicists expect newly-elected Jee Byong-moon, Woo Yoon-keun, and Choi Jae-chun to form a new power of specialists in the new Assembly. They will surely work toward realizing a clean and new form of politics.
