[Professor You-Kyung Han's Research Team Clarifies Global 'Extreme Rainfall' Causes]
A joint research team led by Professor You-Kyung Han of Chonnam National University, Professor Seung-Ki Min of POSTECH, and researchers from the USA and Germany, has clarified the causes of 'extreme rainfall' phenomena due to global warming. Utilizing satellite precipitation data from 1980 to 2020, the team developed a deep learning model to quantify the correlation between daily precipitation patterns and global warming. Their findings revealed that since 2015, over half of the days have shown precipitation patterns that deviate from natural variability and are clearly influenced by global warming. Significant changes were observed particularly in the Eastern United States, East Asia (including Korea), the Amazon rainforest, and the subtropical Pacific regions. The research has been published in the prestigious journal 'Nature', indicating that the increase in extreme rainfall frequency and the increase in non-rainy days are clear signs of global warming. The team highlighted that the developed deep learning model can discern nonlinear responses and efficiently detect regional change patterns caused by global warming.
