New figurative works will be installed to remember the May 18 Democratic Movement at CNU, the epicenter of the Movement. CNU announced that the University will install figurative sculptures on campus (around Bongji Pond) in order to pay tribute to the memory of the CNU members, who participated in the May 18 Movement. By upholding the cause of the Movement for democracy and human rights, young students will take pride in themselves as the students of CNU. The project, valued at 500 million won, will be completed before May 18, 2004. The figurative works will be selected through a public design contest. In order to select outstanding works to represent the historical significance of CNU as the center of May 18 Movement, CNU will invite the public to join in a prize contest for best works. The surrounding area where the sculptures will be installed will be formed as an environmental friendly and comfortable site for rest, cultural activities, and education. The applications will be accepted till Nov. 12 and there will be a field briefing on Nov. 12. The completed works of arts should be submitted between Dec. 8 and 9. The prizewinning works will be announced in mid-December. For the project, CNU established a Committee for the Installation of Figurative Works In Memory of the May 18 Democratic Movement, which consists of thirteen members including university administration officials, members of the May 18 Research Institute, and student representatives. From Oct. 25 through 28, CNU conducted an electronic survey through its homepage to ask about the best site for the May 18 sculptures on campus. The survey results revealed that most of the survey participants selected the May 18 Square and the area in front of the White Library for the sculpture site. In 1980, when the May 18 Movement occurred, CNU had to see that many young lives had been sacrificed such as Park Gwan-hyun or Yoon Sang-won. An official of the university administration said, \"Chonnam National University, called as a symbol of honest Korean intellectuals, underwent the hardships in 1980 when so many young lives had been sacrificed. We have not had any memorial sculptures or modeled works on campus to this date, although over twenty years have passed. With the installation of new sculptures and modeled works, we can keep our pride as the center of the democracy and human rights movement.\"
