CNU’s six research teams were selected to receive the 2003 research grants for basic sciences (humanities and social sciences) from Korea Research Foundation. The selected teams will receive 5.4 billion won for their research projects. CNU researchers accomplished the splendid feat of winning the research grants for their projects on humanities and social sciences, which have been in the declining trends. CNU’s continuous efforts to restore the humanities have been reflected on diverse events and programs such as ‘Talks on Humanities.’ According to the announcement of Korea Research Foundation, made on Sept. 6, a total of 68 billion won will be provided for the research projects of humanities and social sciences. A total of 297 projects were included in the announcement. The followings are the CNU research projects, selected by Korea Research Foundation: Translation of \"The Complete Works of Chu Hsi’s” - Prof. Paik Eun-ky in the Dept. of Philosophy (Philosophy Studies and Education Center) and forty other researchers Prof. Paik will be financially supported for the next three years. His study on the translation of Chu Hsi’s works has attracted great attention for its large scale projects. Chu Hsi (1130-1200) was a neo-Confucian philosopher who emphasized principle (li) as a fundamental reality. He explained and elaborated the teachings of Cheng Yi that principle is a unity, and he was thus recognized as a founder of the school of thought, which became known as the Cheng-Zhu School or School of Principle (li-xue). He wrote commentaries on the Analects of Confucius, on the Book of Mencius, on the Great Learning, and on the Doctrine of the Mean, bringing these works together as a collection which he called the Four Books. Prof. Paik will work with the CNU Philosophy Studies and Education Center and the International Culture Research Center of Daegu Haany University for his research project. Since 1998, Prof. Paik and his research team have held academic meetings for Chu Hsi studies. He said, “I plan to translate a collection of Chu Hsi’s works from No. 1 through No. 65 for the next three years. The translation of Chu Hsi’s works is not a return to the past, but a recovery of cultural codes that were lost.” A Comparative Study of Nine Major Languages in the World: Typological Review - Prof. Song Gyong-an in the Dept. of German Lang. & Lit., Humanities Research Institute, 3 Yrs, 30 Participants for the Research Project This is a comparative study of nine major languages in the world: Korean, English, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and Arabic. Historical Memories and Cultural Re-actualization: April 3rd Uprising and May 18 Democratization Movement - Prof. Na Gan-chae in the Dept. of Sociology, May 18 Research Center, 2 Yrs, 21 Participants Along with the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, the Jeju April 3rd incident is said as a civilian massacre, which erupted on the southern island while the country was under U.S. military rule. At least 25,000 to 30,000 islanders are estimated to have been killed by police and military forces in the process of quelling large-scale uprisings between 1947 and 1954, which past authoritative governments branded as threatening rebellions by communists. Through the research projects, the two tragic issues will be discussed in the academic point of view by focusing on the historical, cultural, and artistic aspects of the incidents.
