[islands and coastal villages]
Chonnam National University's Coastal Aquaculture Research Institute has published a booklet on islands and coastal villages.
South Korea is the world's fourth-largest island nation. Currently, South Korea has 3,400 islands, and they are our important treasure in terms of culture, tourism, environment, ocean, and ecological resources.
In the past, communication with islands was challenging due to the geographical isolation, and maritime transportation was the only means of access. However, now bridges connect islands, even connecting islands to each other, alleviating nostalgia and inconvenience related to islands.
Most of the paths to the islands pass through coastal villages. Coastal villages are easily accessible but not often frequented by people. However, coastal villages evoke a unique smell and atmosphere reminiscent of peaceful nature.
Islands and coastal villages, which are not well known to the public, are distributed throughout the country. Islands, due to their isolated environments, exude a different exotic atmosphere compared to cities. Therefore, experts gathered to publish this booklet. Islands, the sea, and coastal villages are necessary resources for us and hold precious treasures of tourism and culture.
We hope that this record will become a driving force for the development and education of islands and coastal villages in the future. Islands are our territory and a new growth engine for the future.
[Development of Digital Aquaculture Innovation Technology]
Professor Kim Tae-ho and his research team at Chonnam National University have participated in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' project "Development of Digital Aquaculture Innovation Technology." The goal of this research project is to develop a smart aquaculture system. They have secured a total research budget of 202 billion won, including 180 billion won in research funds and 22 billion won in funding from participating companies. The research will take place from 2022 to December 2026. The key focus of this project is to address the decrease in aquaculture productivity due to climate change and disease spread by utilizing big data and AI technology to develop an intelligent aquaculture system. Professor Kim Tae-ho's team plans to establish a smart aquaculture system and develop a Korean-style digital land-based aquaculture model that enables cost savings and optimal production. This project involves experts from national research institutions and private companies.

[World's First Genetic Association Map for Abalones Using GBS Technique]
Professor Ko Kang-hee at Chonnam National University received the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Award for Excellence in the field of marine and fisheries science and technology during the 2022 Marine and Fisheries Science and Technology Week (November 8-11) held at SKY31 in Jamsil.
Professor Ko Kang-hee and his team in the Department of Aquatic Bioscience received support from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' Practical Aquaculture Project, achieving outstanding results in areas such as molecular breeding, reproductive mechanisms, and vital activities of aquatic organisms.
They developed molecular breeding technology for northern abalones through quantitative genotypic and phenotypic analysis, overcoming issues with existing selective breeding and increasing the accuracy of superior traits' expression. In particular, they created the world's first genetic association map for abalones using the GBS technique.

[Consulting Support Project for HACCP Registration in Land-based Aquaculture Facilities]
Professor Kim Seon-jae of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at Chonnam National University received the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Commendation in 2022 for his contributions to the field of seafood safety management policy. Professor Kim Seon-jae participated in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' consulting support project for HACCP registration in land-based aquaculture facilities, contributing to the development of HACCP registration tasks and ensuring the safety and freshness of seafood production. His research team continued their efforts to secure seafood safety through HACCP registration and protect public health. Professor Kim Seon-jae pledged to make every effort to raise consumer awareness of HACCP seafood and activate registration efforts.
These research and consulting projects have had a significant impact on the local aquaculture industry by promoting seafood safety, improving production efficiency, and enhancing the competitiveness of aquaculture products in domestic and international markets. Additionally, they have contributed to the protection of public health and the development of innovative technologies in the aquaculture sector.
