[Southern Indian Ocean Dipole as a trigger for Central Pacific El Nino since the 2000s.]

Researchers at Chonnam National University, led by Professor Ham Yu-geun, have discovered a new predictor for Central Pacific El Niño events. They found that the occurrence of Central Pacific El Niño is closely related to the sea surface temperature variations in the southern Indian Ocean, exhibiting a dipole pattern. This discovery allows for the prediction of Central Pacific El Niño events up to 14 months in advance, enhancing preparedness for weather-related disasters and food shortages. This research, supported by the Korea Meteorological Industry Promotion Agency, was published in the journal 'Nature Communications.‘
